He has previously served on the state veterinary association's Executive Board, Animal Welfare Committee, was chair of the nominating committee in 2009, was a member of the Veterinary Licensing Taskforce, and was a contributing author to the most recent edition of the NJVMA's Pain Management Guidelines. He was previously the liason between the NJVMA and the State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, was named Veterinarian of the Year by the New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association in 2004, and is also the Past-President of the Northern New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association. He currently serves the NJVMA as a member of the Continuing Education Task force by helping to plan the NJVMA's Annual Veterinary Education Conference. During his time with the ACVC he was Vice President from 2015-2018, and and President from 2018-2019. He was an appointed trustee for the Atlantic Coast Veterinary Conference (ACVC) from 2010-2019. He was President of the New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association (NJVMA) from 2008-2009. Hornstein is the owner and medical director of the Monroe Animal Hospital.
